ElectionWatch '04: Hip Hop and Elections

May 5, 2004

Ever since it emerged off the streets of The Bronx in the mid-1970's, hip hop has had a significant and growing influence on popular culture. But what influence will hip hop culture have in the 2004 elections? On this ElectionWatch '04 edition of Making Contact, we take a look at how grassroots activists within the hip hop community view the political process, and how they are using hip hop to organize around the November elections and beyond.

Featuring:

Davey D, DJ, hip hop historian, journalist and community activist; Jeff Chang, journalist, author of Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip Hop Generation; Aya De Leone, performer, poet, activist; KRS 1 (aka Kris Parker), hip hop performer.
