Was mainstream media in cahoots with government forces in the lead up to the Iraq War? In his film, “The War You Don’t See,” Australian journalist John Pilger reveals evidence of American and British journalists failing to scrutinize evidence or dig for hard facts in the days before the 2003 invasion. He argues that embedded news reporters and their outlets simply towed official government lines, and that the public sees only a small portion of what’s really happening in battlefields.

Will the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan ever end? And when they do, how will we measure victory? For journalist and author Dahr Jamail, who’s reported from Iraq and the middle east extensively since 2003, both wars have already been lost. And it’s only getting worse.

On this edition, we interview Jamail about the stresses on U.S. soldiers, on-going wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the growing refusal to serve among members of the US military. Jamail’s new book is titled: The Will to Resist: Soldiers Who Refuse to Fight in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In the run-up to the war in Iraq, a lot of attention was given to the plight of Iraqi women. The constant drumbeat from the Bush administration was that U.S. interest in Iraq was liberation — with women’s rights as a top priority. What went largely unreported is that Iraqi women activists have been organizing – for the last 50 years. So what was life like for women before the invasion? And… what’s it like now? On this edition, we hear from author and activist, Nadje Al-Ali who talks about the reality of women’s lives in Iraq.

Featuring:

Nadje Al-Ali is the co-author of a new book entitled, “What Kind of Liberation? Women and the Occupation of Iraq.” She is also the director at the University of London, Department of Gender Studies Center at SOAS.

In March 2008, hundreds of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans gathered outside Washington, DC to talk about what they saw and did in combat. Their personal stories showed how the military occupation of a foreign country inevitably leads to war crimes, an increase in racism, dehumanization, and sexism. They also spoke of the difficulties veterans are having obtaining proper medical care, and the methods they’re using to fight back.

March 19th 2008, marks the 5 year anniversary of the day the US officially invaded Iraq. Since that day in 2003, more than 80,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed, along with around 4,000 US members of the US military.

Whether one considers it a war, an occupation, an act of pre-emptive self defense, or an act of imperialist aggression, the undeniable fact is that along with September 11th, the conflict in Iraq has become the defining event of our time.

This week, we hear from people on many sides of the conflict; military, civilian, and academic. Iraqis who’ve lost family members, a leading expert on what role oil really plays in US policy towards Iraq, and Americans who want to “stay the course until the job is done.”

A severe lack of unembedded reporting on the Iraq war has resulted in a corresponding lack of information about the realities of this war. What truths go unreported? Will the Bush administration attack Iran? What will the increased militarization in Pakistan mean for the Middle East? How will the United States government and the people respond?

This re-release marks the 75th anniversary of Britain “granting independence” to Iraq while keeping bases and oil holdings in the country.

Since 9/11, the U.S. Congress has appropriated $610 billion dollars in war-related money. With inflation figured in, that’s roughly the same amount spent over the full 16 years of the Vietnam War. The Iraq War alone has cost the U.S. $450 billion dollars.

And what about the cost to the Iraqi people? In addition to civilian casualties, since 2003 hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been forced to flee their war-torn country to nearby neighboring countries–countries that either don’t want them or can’t take care of them.

On this edition, correspondent Dahr Jamail takes us to the streets of Damascus, Syria where we hear from the Iraqi refugees themselves and the organizations trying to assist them.
