Organizational Internships

Want to be involved in progressive media? Become an Organizational Intern at National Radio Project! You’ll join a team of highly trained and passionate people in a supportive and nurturing environment, while gaining valuable media skills.

Making Contact places Organizational Interns in the following areas:

  • Audio Community
  • Social Media / Facebook, Google Ads, Twitter
  • Speakers Engagement
  • Web Editing
  • Development/Fundraising
  • Marketing
  • Station Marketing

Interns are expected to make a three-month minimum commitment and spend a minimum of 8 hours per week in the National Radio Project office.  Some online social marketing volunteers can work some hours off-site.

Making Contact is hiring three online interns to augment our online engagement work. Online interns at Making Contact focus on a particular web communications area while delving deeper into their particular subject area of expertise. Within their subject area of expertise, Interns scour the blogosphere for posts for Making Contact to respond to and look for content to post on Making Contact’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Interns become intimately familiar with the world of activists and politically active journalists, academics and bloggers. Within their particular web communications area, interns engage deeply with the question of how to connect Making Contact shows with related online communities.

Audio Community Intern
National Radio Project is looking for a 5-10 hr/week Audio Community Intern. Interns who specialize on the audio publicity side update Making Contact’s LibSyn, SoundCloud and Itunes pages. They play a central role in updating Making Contact’s Facebook and Twitter with updated sound information and commenting on posts made by Making Contact’s friends at radio stations nationwide.
Interns engage deeply with the question of how to connect Making Contact shows and the various communities using these audio platforms. This internship is unpaid and reports to Making Contact’s web editor. Some of these tasks can be carried out offsite. This is 4-6 month position.
Some tasks that you might do include:
  • Designing and implementing outreach strategies to generate and increase awareness and web audiences.
  • Updating profiles / pages / events / campaigns in social media sites (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud etc.)
  • Researching and identifying potential publicity opportunities in a particular subject area and exploring ways in which we might engage our user community both within our existing sites and on external social media platforms.
  • Engaging with radio stations and general audiences online.
  • Tracking audio listeners and page visits.
  • Transcribing on a selective basis.

Speakers Engagement  Intern
National Radio Project is looking for a 5-10/week Speakers Community Intern. This intern is responsible for connecting with Making Contact’s featured panelists and speakers and with our weekly mailing list. Interns who specialize on the speakers side play a central role in notifying Making Contact’s friends about new shows.

This internship is unpaid and reports to Making Contact’s web editor. Some of these tasks can be carried out offsite. This is 4-6 month position.
Some tasks that you might do include:

  • Designing and implementing email strategies to increase open rates and click throughs.
  • Engaging with featured speakers.
  • Monitoring and analyzing email metrics.
  • Updating profiles / pages / events / campaigns in social media sites (i.e., Facebook, Twitter)
  • Researching and identifying potential publicity opportunities in a particular subject area and exploring ways in which we might engage our user community both within our existing sites and on external social media platforms.
  • Transcribing on a selective basis.

 

Web Editing Intern
National Radio Project is looking for a 6-15hr/week Web Editing Intern who can help update our website. We’re looking for a candidate who knows basic HTML and can navigate through WordPress. Knowledge of basic photo editing is preferred. Interns implement and monitor weekly AdWords ads and respond to related comments on our website.

The intern can work at home, but will occasionally need to come into our offices. This internship is unpaid and reports to Making Contact’s web editor. Some of these tasks can be carried out offsite. This is 4-6 month position.
Tasks include:

  • Making weekly web updates to our website (www.radioproject.org)
  • Selecting and editing photos for our website and E-newsletters
  • Designing and implementing outreach strategies to generate and increase awareness online.
  • Updating profiles / pages / events / campaigns in social media sites (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, SoundCloud etc.)
  • Researching and identifying potential publicity opportunities in a particular subject area and exploring ways in which we might engage our user community both within our existing sites and on external social media platforms.

Development Intern

The Development Intern supports a range of activities, including: correspondence, research, online social networking, gifts processing and database administration. This position will provide excellent experience to anyone interested in fundraising and development as a career.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage individual donor communications, including donor letters, acknowledgements and tracking.
  • Assist with editing E-newsletters and mail appeals
  • Database entry to support communication with our supporters.
  • Provide administrative support to Associate Director and Executive Director.
  • Identify and research potential foundation and individual donors.
  • Assisting in researching and editing grant proposals;

Desired skills and qualifications:

  • Resourceful
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Highly organized; experienced in maintaining paper- and electronic-based office systems;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, online social networking, online research and general familiarity with databases

Marketing Intern

Are you interested in brand-building, audience-building or both?  Do you believe in the power of media to transform consciousness? If so, consider an internship with Making Contact, a media nonprofit committed to social justice.  This internship is a great opportunity to plan and execute marketing strategies for social justice media, while building your resume.

  • Work on developing, implementing & executing outreach and branding strategies to increase our online, local and national presence
  • Design deeper strategies to engage listeners and supporters
  • Research and identify potential publicity opportunities
  • Link to grassroots groups’ constituency to make use of our programs as educational tools and advocacy work
  • Develop performance measures to assess the scope, reach, and impact of our online and social media presence
  • Use Public Radio Exchange (PRX) and our current Station Database to cultivate and deepen relationships with stations and survey new and existing station needs to build audience
  • Market shows to new radio stations via phone and email communications
