MAKING CONTACT - a weekly international radio program

Trading Democracy: The WTO and Public Interests

September 3, 2003

From September 10th through the 14th the World Trade Organization will hold its fifth ministerial meeting since its inception in 1995. Trade representatives head to Cancun, Mexico, with a number of critical -- and contentious -- issues on the table, including agriculture subsidies and opening public sectors to international investment.

On this edition of Making Contact, we take a look at the WTO, public interests, and civil society opposition to an international trade regime.

Featuring:

Maria Atilano, Mexican Action Network against Free Trade; Miguel Pickard, Center of Economic and Political Investigation for Community Actions; Aida Domínguez, a woman from the fishing community of Puerto Madero, Mexico; Claudia Cruz, Network of Gender and Trade; Zapatista Comandante Zebedeo; Lori Wallach, Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch; Scott Sinclair, Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives; George Naylor, National Family Farm Coalition; Peter Rosset, Institute for Food and Development Policy/Food First; Mark Ritchie, Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy.
