MAKING CONTACT - a weekly international radio program
March 27, 2002
Medical researchers and drug companies use millions of animals each year for laboratory experiments. Government agencies require that animal tests only take place when other methods are unavailable, and the animals need to be treated humanely. On this program, we take a look at the Animal Welfare Act, and current debates about whether animal tests are necessary and reliable enough to ensure human health.
Featuring:
Jim Rogers, spokesperson for the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS); Marshall Smith, former APHIS senior investigator; Suzanne Roy, program director of In Defense of Animals; Dr. Eliot Katz, founder and director of In Defense of Animals; Matt Rossell, whistleblower at Oregon Regional Primate Center at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU); Dr. Wise Young, scientist who developed spinal chord injury treatment; Dr. Ray Greek, president of Americans for Medical Advancement; Alix Fano, author of "Lethal Laws: Animal Testing, Human Health and Environmental Policy."
