The Usual Suspects? Racial Profiling in the U.S.

February 27, 2002

Since September 11th, racial profiling has been used as a tactic in what government officials call the war on terrorism. But for African-Americans in the United States racial profiling is nothing new. On this program we speak to African-American organizers, police officers and religious leaders who are working to put a stop to this practice in their communities. We also take a look at another form of racial profiling: retail discrimination.

Featuring:

David Harris, Author of "Profiles in Injustice: Why Police Profiling Cannot Work"; Sergeant De Lacy Davis, Black Cops Against Police Brutality (B-CAP); Diop Kamau, Police Complaint Center; Rev. Canon Nan Arrington Peete, Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio; Hilary Shelton, NAACP; Sam Anderson, Center for Law and Social Justice at Medgar Evars College; Amir Abdul Malik, An African-American Muslim leader in Oakland, CA; Elaine Vaughan, U.C. Irvine professor and victim of retail discrimination; Rondi Waugh, Loan consultant in Oakland, CA, and victim of retail discrimination; Michael Harris, Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area; Rosalyn Taylor O'Neale, Business advisor on issues of diversity and discrimination.
