Beyond the Burqa: The Taliban, Women and the C.I.A.

September 12, 2001

Afghanistan is a country devastated by many years of war, a serious drought, and the dictatorial rule of the Taliban, a group that claims to be bringing the country back to the purity of Islam. Women suffer most as a result. On this special Women's Desk program, we take a look at U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, and at how Afghan women are resisting the Taliban.

Featuring:

Wayne Madsen, Electronic Privacy Information Center; Sonali Kolhatkar, board member of the Afghan Women's Mission
Jan Goodwin, author of The Price of Honor; Nuzhat Kidwai, founder of the Women's Action Forum; Marina Mateen, Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA); Huma Saeed, RAWA; Saima Kareem, RAWA; Elham Rahmanie, Creating Hope International; Sehar Saba, RAWA student; Mavis Leno, Feminist Majority Foundation.
