What's Dirty About the Clean Industry?

July 11, 2001

For many of us, our daily lives consist of frequent interactions with high-technology products. It may seem that the digital domain has little impact on nature. But according to workers in hi-tech manufacturing and independent reports on the industry, that's far from the truth. On this program we take a look at the environmental consequences of computer and electronics production.

Featuring:

Jim Harris, former maintenance technician for National Semiconductor; Mandy Hawes, attorney representing workers in lawsuits against IBM and National Semiconductor; Ruben Cardoso, former senior assembler at IBM; Kevin Miller, recycling coordinator for the City of Napa, California; Ted Smith, executive director of the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition; Steve Wyatt, Computer Recycling Center; Lily Hsueh, secretary general of the Taiwan Environmental Action Network; Wen-ling Tu, co-author of "Environmental and Social Aspects of Taiwanese and U.S. Companies in Hsinchu Science-Based Industrial Park."
