The Peoples Will: Haiti's Peasant Movement

January 13, 1999

In 1991 the democratically elected president of Haiti was ousted from power after a coup, tacitly approved by the United States. Three years later the United States helped to re-install Jean Bertrand Aristide, a leader of Haiti's peasant movement, but with economic and political stipulations.

On this program we take a look at the social movement in Haiti that is organizing against privatization despite heavy pressure from the United States and international financial institutions.

Featuring:

Allan Nairn, investigative journalist who has written for the Washington Post, New York Times and The Nation magazine; Beverly Bell, former Aristide staffer; Max Blanchet and Pierre La Boissiere, Bay Area Haitian American Council; Josette Perard, founder, Lambi Fund.
