MAKING CONTACT - a weekly international radio program
September 9, 1998
A quarter of a century has passed since that day when a coup brought down the democratically elected socialist government of Salvador Allende. For about sixteen years a dictatorship ran the country. The leader of the coup, General Agusto Pinochet oversaw repression that included political imprisonment, torture and murder. In 1989 Chile returned to a democratic system and since then has had a civilian government. Today we're going to talk about the past and present of Chile and the implications for people who live elsewhere in the world.
Featuring:
Reese Erlich, journalist who's reported from Chile and many other countries; Kathleen Vickery, researcher and long term activist for human rights in Chile.
