Blocking the MAI: Activism and Free Trade

April 22, 1998

As the Multilateral Agreement on Investment, or MAI, hits some turbulence along the route to approval by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, grassroots activists are mobilizing an international effort to challenge economic globalization. On this program you'll hear about the MAI, a far reaching trade treaty that would grant transnational corporations greater leverage to invest in foreign countries, undermining local control over resources, social conditions, and environmental standards.

Featuring:

Dan Seligman, director, Sierra Club's Responsible Trade Campaign; Joshua Karliner, author of "The Corporate Planet: Ecology and Politics in the Age of Globalization," editorial coordinator of Corporate Watch; Lori Wallach, Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch; Renato Ruggiero, MAI supporter; Juliette Beck, California Fair Trade Campaign; Celia Alario, Rainforest Action Network; Paul George, Peninsula Peace and Justice Center; Tony Clarke, Canada based Polaris Institute; Maude Barlow, Council of Canadians; Alan Larson, the lead negotiator, U.S. State Department.
